Leading Without Escaping

Leading Without Escaping
I noticed something uncomfortable.
I can sit for 5 hours straight playing a game.
Focused. Engaged. Improving.
But when it comes to:
- learning
- building
- doing real work
Suddenly:
- I’m tired
- I need a break
- “later” sounds reasonable
That’s not a time problem.
That’s an escape pattern.
The Truth We Avoid
Games are simple:
- Clear goals
- Immediate feedback
- No emotional weight
Real life is different:
- Uncertainty
- Delayed results
- Fear of not being good enough
So we escape.
Not because we’re lazy —
because we don’t want to face the discomfort.
Leadership Starts Here
Before leading a team, you need to see where you’re escaping in your own life.
Ask yourself:
- Where am I avoiding hard things?
- Where am I “busy” but not moving forward?
- Where am I choosing comfort over progress?
Be honest.
Because if you can’t see it, you can’t lead through it.
What Actually Works
You don’t fix this with motivation.
You fix it with structure + awareness.
1. Make it visible
Know exactly what matters today.
Not 10 things.
1–3 real tasks.
2. Remove friction
If starting is hard, you won’t start.
Make it stupid simple:
- open laptop
- open file
- start timer
No thinking.
3. Stay in the game
Not forever. Just long enough.
Even 30 minutes of real focus is better than 5 hours of escape.
The Shift
Instead of asking:
“Do I feel like doing this?”
Ask:
“Am I the kind of person who does this?”
That’s leadership.
Not controlling others —
but choosing who you are in action.
Final Thought
You don’t need more time.
You don’t need more talent.
You need to stop escaping.
And start showing up — even when it’s uncomfortable.
That’s where real growth starts.
